Significant Figures

LI: To Identify Significant Figures

For maths group 1’s task was to solve and have a better understand of what Significant Figures are. We went through the given questions as a group and after we created a DLO showing how Sig.Fig work. Significant figures are the important number’s in a number that show a easier way to show how precise a measurement is.

The Lady who said Kia Ora

We read about Dame Naida Glavish, a wahine toia who choice to greet callers with “Kia Ora” instead of “Hello.” Her one action led to a massive change in New Zealand’s cultural identity.

We think Dame Naida Glavish was an agent of change because she stood up for her rights to say Kia Ora when calling people. Which is changing.

Fly by Night

The sun setting behind the jagged silhouette of hills. The moon was rising as the silver light spilled over the canopy, turning the leaves into shards of glass. The wind breezed through me as chills ran down my feathers. Tonight wasn’t any night, tonight was the night I adventure through the sky. One wish that I finally was about to accomplish. Every evening, as the shadows stretched long across the forest floor, I watched as my mother would stir, her feathers rustling like dry silk, before she launched herself into the abyss, I asked her “Am I ready to fly”? My mother whispered as I got the chills “Not yet but you will one day”. I remained behind, anchored into my nest, feeling like a stone at the bottom of a river as I watched others fly and play around. Not knowing how to fly was tough. The shift from the cozy center of the nest to the precipice was more than a few steps. It was a cold, terrifying night. As I crept toward the edge of the nest. The familiar world of tangled twigs and soft moss fell away. The ground below didn’t just look distant; it looked predatory. The grass floor, which seemed so soft from the safety of the nest, was now sharp greens and shadows, swirling in a dizzying depth. I summoned all my bravery and drew myself up closing my eyes, I took a leap of faith and flapped my majestic wings. Peeking through one eye, the terror turned into wonder. I wasn’t falling, I was flying in the air. The grass that had looked like a distant threat was now soft. I excitedly swoop through the tree trunks. I land back in my nest and I see my mother coming back. I told my mother about what I experienced and I asked her the last time “Am I ready to fly with you?”. My mother confidently replied “yes dear you may fly with me”.  The sun setting behind the jagged silhouette of hills. Johnny Pohe and the great Escape

For reading we were learning about Johnny Pohe and his great escape. Johnny Pohe was a pilot that taught people and fought in wars, one day he got caught and was sent to prison camp in Germany. Him and other people that were caught in the prison made up a play to make three tunnels Tom, Dick and Harry. Dick and Tom were exploded and abandoned and Harry was the last standing one, they waited for a moonless night to escape. Once that came they went for the opening and went into the tunnels, due to a delay only 200 people were supposed to make it out but only seventy six escaped, and three escaped safely. For this task we made the pros and cons of being an escape or staying inside the prison.

LCM

For maths our task was to answer the questions about LCM (Lowest Common Multiples). To get a lowest common you need to have two numbers and work out all of the number they can multiply into, and when you find a first match between multiples, then that is the lowest common factor of the both of the tables.

Building our Class Culture

LI: To learn to collaborate and share ideas

Our task for this activity was to use our collaboration skills and to respect leaders around the world and other’s culture. This task was to strengthen our classes bonds so that the new students don’t feel shy around us. The important part of this task was the friends we made during the task.

Social Influence

LI: How to identify the difference between positive and negative social influence

For Inquiry this week we have discussed as a class, what is “social Influence” and understand how to identify the difference between positive and negative social influence.

We also dug deeper into “Normative Influence” which means doing things to fit in and “Informational Influence”, is the things we do because we think others know more than us.

Something we found interesting was that social influence can really have a big affect on people.

Rounding

LI: How to round up numbers to the billions place values and three decimal places

For maths our task was to solve rounding equations and learn how rounding works. We explored how rounding works and learnt as a group. Our teacher explained that rounding means changing a number to the nearest ten, hundred, or another place value to make it easier to work with. After learning the rules, we went through some questions together to get a better understanding of rounding.

Prime and Composite Numbers

This week me and Group 1 in maths did prime and composite numbers, we had 23 questions about prime and composite, then when we were done we made a DlO about our work and this is the prompt that we used,

A prime number is a whole number which is only divisible by itself and one. A prime number only has 2 factors and if an number does have more than two, it is a composite number. For example : 5 is an prime number because 1×5 = 5 and there are no other factors. The first and only even prime number is “2”. other factors except 1 and 5.

Place Value

LI: How to identify place value up to the billions and three decimal places

For maths group one’s task was to learn how to solve place value problems and how we use place value in different area’s.  Place value is the place of a digit in a number that tells us how much it is worth. The number system is based on groups of ten, which means each place in a number is ten times bigger than the one to its right. Place value also has decimals, which help us show numbers that are smaller than one whole. The decimal point separates the whole number part from the smaller parts. To the right of the decimal point, each place value becomes ten times smaller than the one before it.
